Eugene Fight Club
In the heart of Austin, Texas, where the vibrant pulse of live music reverberates through every street corner, Keith McKai, a soulful and ambitious guitarist and vocalist, found himself yearning for a fresh start. Known for his stirring performances and a voice that could resonate through the darkest corners of a listener’s soul, Keith felt a calling that beckoned beyond the familiar stages of his hometown.
In the autumn of 2022, driven by a desire to create something unique, Keith packed his life into a suitcase and embarked on an adventure that would take him across the globe to Budapest. Here, in this city teeming with history and cultural confluence, Keith would forge a new identity for himself and eventually, what would become Eugene Fight Club. Upon arriving in Budapest, Keith's search for musical kindred spirits led him to a smoky, unassuming bar tucked away in the winding alleys of the city’s historic district. It was here, amidst the dim budapest shadows and the echo of clinking glasses, that he met Eric De Bosque. Eric, a bassist whose melodies had the sweet, bambasts of a raging river, hailing from a long line of musicians steeped in a rich tapestry of sounds and influences.
The synergy between Keith and Eric was immediate, their mutual understanding of music’s power to transcend barriers creating an unshakeable bond. They spent nights at Orange Terem a rehearsal space filled with eclectic records and memorabilia from Eric’s travels working on what would become their sound that was beginning to take shape, so did the dream of forming a band. The duo christened themselves "Eugene Fight Club," a name inspired by the movie.
As the months rolled into years, the sound of Eugene Fight Club matured. Yet, something essential was missing—a beat, a heartbeat, the kinetic energy that only a drummer could provide. Days turned into nights of jam sessions and auditions in Budapest, but the perfect match remained elusive.
In the spring of 2024, as the cherry blossoms painted Budapest in a wash of pastel color, fate finally intervened. While sipping espresso on a lively terrace, Keith overheard a percussive rhythm that seemed to echo his heart’s own beat. It emanated from behind a hidden courtyard, where the city’s most talented drummers often gathered for impromptu sessions. There, amidst a flurry of hands and cymbals, was Carlos Sanchez. A passionate and electrifying drummer, Carlos carried the rhythms of his Ecuadorian heritage intertwined with the raw energy he absorbed from traveling as a Jazz performer in London. His drumming was not just sound, but a language—a narrative told with each strike of the drum.
The trio's first rehearsal felt like a revelation. The music flowed as if it had been always waiting to be discovered, an intoxicating blend of rock, soul, and wild, unrestrained energy that left all who heard it craving more. Eugene Fight Club was complete.
